Introduction to the Exhibition

The Kogei* world of Kyoto grew in the midst of tradition over a centuries-long history to evolve abundant artistic expressions and mastery of technique.
Since its founding in October 1946, the Kyoto Kogei Association has been a leader in the world of Kogei in post-war Japan. It serves to surpass the normal boundaries of sectionalism, schools of thought, and individualism.
The Association currently includes dyeing/weaving, ceramics, urushi (lacquer), metal, and “various other Kogei.” Membership includes around 300 of Kyoto's foremost Kogei artists who annually show their works in an Association show in early spring and put up a commemorative show on a much large scale every five years. Through these shows and other involvements, the Association continues to pursue the beauty of modern Kogei.
Upon this, the 80th anniversary of the Association, and in order to further that pursuit of beauty we once again exhibit the works of our members. This exhibition is entitled "The Brilliance of Kogei -- Japanese Craft Connecting to the Future," and it has been curated to share the universal value of Kogei with people from around the world and to connect with societies in the future.

*Kogei = A Japanese term that includes all traditional Japanese arts and crafts.

Greeting

理事長
We will soon be welcoming the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Kyoto Kogei Association back in 1946.
Many craft artists from a wide range of fields such as dyeing and weaving, ceramics, lacquer, metalwork, dolls, glass, woodwork, cut gold leaf, leather, cloisonné, bamboo, metal/gemstone, etc. have joined together, transcending the boundaries of different public exhibitions and art schools, to present the quintessence of beautiful craftsmanship.
The essence of craft art has its origins in culture, climate, and traditions. We proudly believe that Kyoto is the foremost place in the world where our artisans are promoting the local industry with a vision for both the present and future in order to preserve and pass the legacy of Japanese crafts on to future generations. Each member works diligently with both traditional and new materials, applying their unique techniques to create works rich in sensibility.
Our 80th anniversary exhibition will be held in conjunction with the 2025 Japan International Exposition (Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai), under the theme: “The Brilliance of Kogei ― Japanese Craft Connecting to the Future”. We hope that many people will visit our exhibition and find a connection with each of these works.
In conclusion, we would like to express our sincere wishes for the continued success and good health of all our members, and to express our sincere gratitude to all those who have given us their cooperation and support in organizing this exhibition.

Noboru Hata
President
Kyoto Kogei Association
